Bunny Tales, Easter Tales

by Charlotte Zolotow. Beautiful color illustrations by Helen Craig. Condition: UNREAD 1998 Houghton Mifflin soft cover, first printing. Short "repaired" tear top edge back cover. Interior perfect. Content: First published nearly 40 years ago, Zolotow's ingenuous paean to spring, a time "when everything lovely begins once again," indeed feels reborn with Craig's winsome illustrations. Combining full-page spreads with smaller panels and spots, her ink, watercolor and colored-pencil art draws from a sumptuous palette of Easter egg colors that reaches full bloom at tale's end, when spring finally catches up to the lonely bunny in search of companionship. When a sleepy owl tells the solo bunny that "there are always rabbits at Easter," he attempts to hunt the place down. Youngsters will be tickled by this misunderstanding and will enjoy having a leg up on the long-eared fellow. Equally gratifying are Craig's renderings of the antics of a diminutive mouse who trails and apes the wandering bunny. In the spirit of a true quest, both travelers are rewarded for their journey: each ends up with a loving mate - and seven offspring. Snuggling with his brood, "The bunny's heart throbbed with happiness at this wonderful earthsmelling sunlit bunny-filled world." Like the endearing protagonist, Zolotow's unabashedly sweet, endearing tale of new life finds its match with Craig's gentle landscapes and cuddly characters. Ages 4-8. Questions welcome. The illustrations--done by an artist who describes his medium as "watercolors, India ink, acrylics, and Hamburger Helper"--match the story perfectly: pink, buck-toothed, and round in the middle, the bunnies are goofy indeed. DJ has very light edge wear (shelf wear). Content: Kennedy deftly weaves a touching retelling of the first Easter as seen through a child's tender eyes. Micah was in the garden checking on a nest of eggs, only to return home to sad news. -"What's happening?" Micah asked as his mother held him tightly. Micah's mother told him that something very sad had happened. Their friend Jesus was dead. Bad men had killed him. After hearing the news Micah was sad and scared. Several days later, Micah went into town to check on the nest of eggs again when something wonderful happened. He overheard a man tell a group of women that Jesus was alive and that they should tell others the good news. One of the speckled eggs was cracked. As he looked more closely, Micah saw a tiny beak poking out of the shell. The egg was beginning to hatch! ""Jesus is alive little bird!"" Micah whispered. "You don't have to hide! It's safe to come out of your shell now because Jesus is alive!" Story of the Easter Bunny

by Jean McCurdy Meade. Adorable and soft color illustrations by Barbara Hosterman Clark. Condition: NEW 2009 Dog Ear paperback, no printing given. Content: Where did the story of the Easter Bunny come from? What does Easter, the Day on which Jesus was raised from the dead that Christians celebrate every year with great joy, have to do with a rabbit that brings joy to children? Did it ever occur to you that there might have been a family of rabbits in the Garden outside Jerusalem where Jesus was laid in the tomb on that sad, amazing day we call Good Friday? Well, if there were rabbits in that garden, maybe one of them saw the Risen Lord even before the faithful women went to the tomb and encountered the Angel telling the news of His Resurrection. Maybe she was a little bunny named Rebekah, who was curious about the strange rumbling she felt early, early that Sunday morning, and the beautiful light that came with the dawn, so out she hopped into the garden, all alone, while her brothers and sisters slept. And there she met the most wonderful person in the world - and somehow she knew Him and He knew her!! And then maybe that little bunny was able to say something without words to those women - and they included her in their story to the others. But then, over the centuries, the part about the rabbit and the first Easter day got forgotten -mostly. Fantasy can be a wonderful way to connect with the truths taught by the Christian faith. Based on the Gospel of Matthew, "The Tale of Rebekah Rabbit" is for children and adults with a heart for what may have happened if, as old legends tell us, animals can talk among themselves and, like humans, can recognize the voice of their Maker! Jean Alden McCurdy Meade, an Episcopal priest since 2002, is the Rector of Mount Olivet Episcopal Church, New Orleans. Ms. Clark is from Crockett, Tx. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

Tale of Rebekah Rabbit, Children's Easter Books

by Paul L. Maier. Wonderful color paintings by Francisco Ordaz. Condition: UNREAD 2001 Concordia large hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), 5th printing. Content: Reviewer: This book follows the same format as Paul Maier's companion book, The Very First Christmas. Maier embeds the story of the first Easter inside the story of a 10-year-old boy named Christopher, who lives with his mother and father, a forest ranger, in a remote area of America's western mountains. As Christopher and his parents are sitting around the table dying Easter eggs, Christopher wonders aloud what the true story of Easter is. His Dad picks up the Bible and the two of them begin to read aloud from the book of Luke. The narrative follows their discussion as they read, with Christopher asking questions that any child might typically ask -- "How do we know Jesus was really God?" "Why did they hang people on crosses, Dad?" "But if Jesus had a solid body and wasn't a ghost, how did he get through the walls?" Maier's format works well in this setting. Quotations from Luke tell the story, but the discussion between Christopher and his Dad explain the Easter story in a way that seems natural and easy to understand. While the text of this book is quite good, what makes this book an excellent addition to the Easter collection is the outstanding artwork of Francisco Ordaz. Questions welcome. [2 copies available]
