ONE GRAIN OF SAND: A Lullaby
words & music by Pete Seeger. Beautiful soft color illustrations by Linda Wingerter. Condition: UNREAD 2002 Little, Brown large hard cover (pictorial boards -no DJ), first printing. Content: A lullaby written by folksinger Pete Seeger for his daughter in the 1950s is the text for this charming picture book that takes children on a journey from the African plains to the city. Gentle, lyrical verses enfold young listeners in a wide, wonderful world, united by love and family. The concept is echoed and enhanced by Wingerter's luminescent, realistic art; the artist's use of texture and color, from cool blues to sunny golds, adds warmth to intimate close-ups, such as a family lovingly watching its new baby, and also to stunning panoramas. The simple language and repetitive words and phrases provide comfort and reassurance to little ones, quietly drawing them toward the close of the book, which shows the children pictured on the first pages now asleep in their mother's arms. Included are sample musical notation, an introductory note discussing the song's origins and performance history, and an invitation for creative adaptation. Among the growing number of books that use song lyrics as text, this clearly stands out as a lovely mesh of art and language that celebrates the beauty and diversity of the world--and family ties. THE OXFORD ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF AMERICAN CHILDREN'S POEMS (Soft cover)
edited by Donald Hall, Poet Laureate 2006-2007. B&W and color illustrations by various artists. Condition: NEW c. 2006 Oxford Univ. Press soft cover, 8th printing. Content: This anthology begins with Native American cradle songs and such early classics as "A Visit from St. Nicholas" and "The Village Blacksmith" before it moves on to enduring favorites by great poets, including Langston Hughes, Carl Sandburg, and Robert Frost. It ends with poems by some of the best poets writing for children today: X. J. Kennedy, Karla Kuskin, Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, Sonia Sanchez, Lucille Clifton, Nikki Giovanni, Gary Soto, Pat Mora, Janet Wong, and more. In just a few cases the words are printed over elaborately colored paintings, and the poetry is lost; but, in general, the design is handsome, with thick paper, lots of white space, and archival illustrations that quietly convey a sense of the place and the time when the poem was written. This is a collection for reading aloud across generations, to give children a taste of what happens when, as David McCord says, "Books fall open / You fall in." Ages 9 - 12. [1 copy available]

DJ shows light wear with light tanning to top DJ edge. Content: Lear's nonsense verse lends itself beautifully to a visual treatment. The Quangle Wangle, a seemingly friendly large mammal, doesn't reveal his face because of his enormous hat, "…a hundred and two feet wide,/With ribbons and bibbons on every side." He's lonely up in his tree, but one day, as bright morning fades into afternoon, he is joined by a procession of fanciful creatures, from a "Fimble Fowl, with a Corkscrew leg" to "the Dong with a luminous nose." The poem closes in the starry night as the animals sing and dance under the "Mulberry moon." This book might also lend itself to classroom use, with kids making up their own animals. ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT
adorable color illustrations by Annie Kubler. "Sheet music" on the back cover. Condition: NEW 2003 Child's Play hardcover (board book), 6th printing. Light shelf wear. Content: This charming board book is beautifully illustrated with colourful and captivating pictures which simply ooze fun and laughter. The familiar rhyme means children will love acting this song out with parents or siblings, ensuring that your house will be full of the sound of laughter. For children just beginning to understand that marks on paper have meaning, this sturdy board book links literacy with other experiences by providing the words and actions for a familiar song. The funny verses are included too ('If you see a crocodile, don't forget to scream!'), together with endearing pictures of babies from a range of ethnic groups acting out the song together. And on the outside back cover is the music - useful for adult accompanists, but also a good introduction for children to the idea that there is more than one set of written symbols in the world. These are eternally popular and enjoyable action nursery rhyme, and they have been given a fun treatment in these new baby board books by Annie Kubler. Featuring adorable happy babies, these books are sure to appeal to the under threes. "Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream," Come on, you know the words, "merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream." But did you know there were more words? "Rock, rock, rock your boat, gently down the stream. If you see a crocodile, don't forget to scream!" "Row, row, row your boat, gently to the shore. If you see a lion, don't forget to roar!" I have to admit that my knowledge for this song only extended to the first two lines and I was delighted to find that there was more of it. Still, even six lines of a song doesn't seem much with which to fill a book, yet Annie Kubler's illustrations turn this simple song into a great action book for babies and toddlers. WAY OUT WEST LIVES A COYOTE NAMED FRANK (Fiction)
text and color illustrations by Jillian Lund. Condition: NEW 1993 Puffin soft cover, 7th printing. Content: Distant indigo mesas, golden-brown sand, sun-baked rocks and green cacti suggest the landscape of the American Southwest in this unassuming, beguiling debut. The eponymous Frank, recognizable by his gray fur and orange-patterned bandanna, chases a rabbit and a skunk with his coyote friend Larry, investigates a tortoise and a gila monster, and flirts with a female coyote. The decorative illustrations and minimal, matter-of-fact text share a forthright simplicity (this very directness, in fact, produces a quiet humor), while the easygoing characters and warm earth tones exude affability. Lund takes a coloring-book approach, neatly filling bold black outlines with solid, almost imperceptibly shaded hues. Such occasional details as a horned toad's spots and a smoothly curving rattlesnake's scales break up the art's overall blockiness. Western cliches are put to droll use here, and readers -- particularly the very young--may respond favorably to the uncomplicated images and Frank's playful expressions (especially the mischievous glint in those shifty eyes). Too cool for words! Ages 4-7. [1 copy available]

WHO IS THE BEAST?
text and wonderful color illustrations by Keith Baker. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1994 Harcourt Brace soft cover, 4th printing. Very very light shelf wear. Content: Traces of the beast are detected by the other forest animals as a magnificent young tiger makes his way through the jungle. The swipe of a majestic striped tail, the flash of hypnotic green eyes and the gleam of pristine white from the underside of massive paws flicker in the undergrowth. As the patterns and colors of the densely foliated habitat become familiar, so the parallels between creatures become obvious. One whiskered face studies another as the tiger stares past his own reflection to a whiskered fish beneath the surface. One pair of green eyes beholds a mirror image when the tiger comes upon a snake. As each creature's unique structure is made evident, a lesson about the tremendous value of the animals and plants that inhabit our world speaks softly through Baker's rhythmic text. The luxuriant artwork blends the use of dark, saturant color and dry over dry painting to create stunning spreads. Graced with a compelling beauty, this gifted author/illustrator's imaginative story presents a timeless message to young readers. Ages 3-7. [1 copy available]
