CHARRO CLAUS AND THE TEJAS KID (Bilingual Middle Reader)
text and vibrant color illustrations by Xavier Garza. Condition: NEW 2008 Cinco Puntos Press hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: Yes, Virginia, Santa has a Mexican cousin - and thus we are on the way to a funny and exciting Christmas Eve in South Texas. “Even Santa Claus sends the jobs he is unable or unwilling to do to Mexico...in this colorful storybook by local author-illustrator Xavier Garza." The simple South Texas Christmas tale is printed in both English and Spanish, allowing for several different bilingual reading opportunities. Let’s welcome Santa’s newest helper: his cousin Pancho, a farmer living down in South Texas who is so smart he speaks both Spanish and English. Back in the day, Pancho was a mariachi singer with a whole lot of style and a fancy sombrero. But as the years passed, Pancho got, well, a little older and a little wider all around. Then one night his primo Santa Claus showed up. Santa needed some help along the US/Mexico border. Pancho volunteered. And then, poof, Santa transformed Pancho into the resplendent Charro Claus with his incredible Flying Burritos. And Charro Claus, it turns out, even had his own surprise elf—his nephew Vincente! All Christmas Eve, Vincente and Pancho deliver toys to the boys and girls on the border. Neither rain, cloudy skies, wire fences, or concrete walls keep them from covering every inch of their newly assigned territory. And they don’t forget a single town or city. How could they? The border is their home. A native of the Rio Grande Valley, Xavier Garza is a prolific author, artist, teacher, and storyteller. It's a hoot! All ages.Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

FRIENDS FROM THE OTHER SIDE / AMIGOS DEL OTRO LADO (Bilingual Children's Story)
by Gloria Anzaldua. Wonderful color illustrations by Consuelo Mendez. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1994 Children's Book Press soft cover, no printing given. Problem: light edgewear bottom edge with a shelfwear "near-crease" back cover. Interior clean & tight. Content: A straightforward bilingual depiction of the variety of responses to Mexican ``illegals'' by Chicanos already living in Texas. Though her friends' first reaction on seeing Joaqu¡n is hostility toward the young mojadito (wetback), Prietita warns them off and befriends him, planning to take him to the herb woman for treatment for the sores he hides under long sleeves. A visit from the Border Patrol hastens the event; the herb woman hides Joaqu¡n and his mother until the danger is past, then shows Prietita how to help her new friend. What's special about this simple story is the realism with which the circumstances are presented. The migra represent the law, and there's nothing negative in their depiction (``even'' the Chicano migra laughs when someone makes a joke), but Prietita's kindness is clearly what is valued here. In M‚ndez's powerful mixed-media illustrations, freely drawn graphite lines define the strong, planar faces and the poverty of the surroundings; appropriately, pervasive bleak gray is only somewhat tempered by the hot, bright colors of Latino clothing and the desert. An authentic portrayal; an excellent basis for discussion of an important issue. Both the Author and the Illustrator are from South Texas. (Ages 4-10) [1 copy only]

HOW WE CAME TO THE FIFTH WORLD (Como vinimos al quinto mundo) [Bilingual Tales of the Americas series]
adapted by Harriet Rohmer & Mary Anchondo. Bright colorful illustrations by Graciela Carrillo. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1988 Children's Book Press hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), library binding, revised edition. Problem: I'm not happy with the binding - nothing loose, just not well bound, IMHO. Light shelf wear in the form of pale rubbings from the book being moved in and out of shelves against other books. Content: A simple retelling of the famous creation story from ancient Mexico with illustrations based on the original Indian picture writings. The Aztec elders believed that the world was created four times before our present fifth world and that the earlier worlds were destroyed because humans were selfish and ignored their gods. Our fifth world can be saved, say the Aztec elders, if people find a way to live together peacefully. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

LIGHT FOOT / PIES LIGEROS (Bilingual)
by Natalia Toledo. Fascinating color paintings by Francisco Toledo. Translated from the Zapotec Spanish by Elisa Amado. Condition: NEW 2007 GroundWood Books hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given, assumed first American printing. English story on the left and Spanish story on the right column. Content: Once upon a time no creatures on Earth died. But they had baby after baby, and before long the world grew crowded. Death decided to solve the problem by challenging everyone to a skip-rope contest — as an immortal, Death won every time, and one by one everyone succumbed to her dare. Soon, every living being knew Death. This intriguing fable is based on Francisco Toledo's series of engravings of Death, a dominant figure in Mexican culture. Toledo, the heir to the great generation of Mexican artists that included Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, has imaginatively explored this integral part of life, and his entrancing images are matched by poetic text from his wife Natalia. A PLACE WEHRE SUNFLOWERS GROW (Bilingual - Japanese/English)
by Amy Lee-Tai. Wonderful colorful illustrations that make Topaz look better than it probably was by Felicia Hoshino. Condition: NEW 2012 Children's Book Press large paperback, first paperback edition, first printing. Bilingual - each page has the English text and Japanese text. Content: Under the harsh summer sun, Mari’s art class has begun. But it’s hard to think of anything to draw in a place where nothing beautiful grows — especially a place like Topaz, the internment camp where Mari’s family and thousands of other Japanese Americans have been sent to live during World War II. Somehow, glimmers of hope begin to surface — in the eyes of a kindly art teacher, in the tender words of Mari’s parents, and in the smile of a new friend. Amy Lee-Tai’s sensitive prose and Felicia Hoshino’s stunning mixed-media images show that hope can survive even the harshest injustice. Essential American history, IMHO. [1 copy left]
