THE STORY OF YELLOW LEAF: Journal of a Sioux Girl [Pop-Up & Lift-The-Flap]
by Gavin Mortimer. Wonderful, accurate color illustrations by Tony Morris. Paper engineering by Linda Birkinshaw. Condition: NEW 2008 Barrons large hardcover (pictorial boards - No DJ issued), first printing. Content: In a compelling story and a series of elaborate illustrations on two-page spreads, a young Sioux girl tells about life on the Dakota grasslands during the 1860s and '70s. Her name, Yellow Leaf, was given to her because she was born in autumn, when the trees were bright with yellow leaves. All of the large color illustrations are embellished with flaps for young readers to lift and see, for instance - Family life inside a tipi (or wigwam); A Sioux boy learning to hunt with bow and arrow; Yellow Leaf and her sister sledding down a snowy slope; White prospectors panning for gold on land belonging to the Sioux. Young readers learn about everyday activities in the Sioux camp, and find out how the Sioux' lives were disrupted by white settlers between 1874 and 1876. The story ends on an elegiac note, following the Sioux victory over General Custer at Little Big Horn. The military disaster prompted the U.S. Government to force the Sioux out of their home territory and onto agencies - or reservations. But before their departure, Yellow Leaf and her brother leave their mark on their land by carving their family history on a large rock. The pop ups are teriffic and large. The flaps are educational and even include the Laramie Treaty. Very nice all around. [1 copy available]

TRAVELS OF THE ZEPHYR: An Interactive Journey Around the World (1923-1925)
by Caroline Mac Killan (Caroline Guezille). Wonderful color drawings and maps with B&W era photos by various artists. Condition: NEW 2010 shrink-wrapped Abrams Books for Young Readers hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), first printing. Content: This is an interactive book that introduces readers to various lands and peoples across the globe through the notes of the fictional explorer James Mac Killian, who lived from 1889 to 1978. James Mac Killian traveled the world in his homemade hot-air balloon, the Zephyr, documenting everything and everyone he encountered. The goal of his particular expeditions was to visit different ethnic groups and discover traditions that dated back to the dawn of time, including different languages, foods, beliefs, and rituals, to name only a few. He explored such places as Greenland, Newfoundland, North America, Brazil, Scotland, Africa, New Zealand, Indonesia, China, and Russia. Now his niece, Caroline Mac Killian, has inherited his research and has decided to publish his findings. Throughout the book there are interactive devices, such as maps that unfold, envelopes with letters, sketches, drawings, and much more. The story is a work of fiction, but the information presented is factual and fascinating. Caroline Mac Killian is the pen name of Caroline Guezille. This interactive book is more than an adventure book (and it's a good one) but an excellent overview of world history. The Author travels to North America and covers the Inuit, Plains Indians, the Mi'kmaq of Newfoundland, and The Trail of Tears. Other travels: Africa, South America, Africa, The Maori of New Zealand, Indonesia, China, & Russia. Each section is accompanied with fold outs, and envelopes full of information, i.e., how to build a teepee and recipes for eating like a native. A 2-page Color map of the travels is provided. Kids and even adults should love this book! [1 copy available]

TUTANKHAMEN'S TOMB [Pop-up Book)
text by Jen Green. Beautiful color drawings and artifact photos. Condition: Gently pre-read 2007 Quarto/Barron's large hard cover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), first American printing. Problem: I can't really tell if the book is pre-read, but it has been perused on the shelf and because it is such a large book, there is shelfwear to the bottom cover spine & bottom board edges. All of the pop-ups are in perfect working order. Content: Combining words and unusual illustrations that incorporate pop-ups, pull tabs, wheels, and flaps, this book tells the dramatic story of archaeologist Howard Carter and his amazing journey to Egypt that culminated with his discovery in 1923 of Tutankhamen's tomb. This beautifully illustrated volume features stunning color photos of objects discovered in Tutankhamen's tomb, as it takes boys and girls along on a virtual archaeological dig. They explore the boy pharaoh's tomb and gain insights into the ancient Egyptian civilization, with emphasis on the Egyptians' particular form of belief in an afterlife. Die-cut holes in the book's pages are part of an ingenious design in which a model of Tutankhamen's sarcophagus literally pops up when the book is opened. And a "sliding door" on the front cover's tomb illustration can be moved back to reveal an illustration of the mummy. The book's lively narrative style includes excerpts from Howard Carter's diary and brings his adventure fully alive. Here is a beautifully designed book that is every bit as much fun as it is educational. The pop-ups are: Carter discovering the tomb; pyramids; Valey of the Kings; shrine; second coffin; Tut's mask; canopic shrine; the boat for reaching the underworld. There are various pull tabs and flaps. Wonderful, even if the outside is rough. Questions encouraged. [1 copy available]

An affordable taste of the Victorian era, A Victorian Dollhouse is perfect for anyone who cherishes Victorian ephemera. Reviewer: "Youtie the front and back cover together and you get a paper 3ddollhouse. This is a GREAT gift for a young niece or neighbor whodoesn't have a dollhouse or who is crazy about them! I gave a bookvery similar to this years ago to my girl and she loved it. She stillhas it to this day. My only complaint about the book is that itdoesn't include any paperdolls with it. TUTANKHAMUN: The Story of Egyptology's Greatest Discovery (Treasures and Experiences Series)
by Jaromir Malek. Wonderful color and B&W drawings and era photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 2009 Andre Deutsch/Carlton (UK) hardcover (pictorial boards) which, whe closed, makes its own box. Very cool. Content: Filled with color and B&W drawings and photos plus envelopes which contain "rare, removable facsimile documents of historic importance." Perfect for home schoolers: school libraries, well maybe - the removable parts will probably go astray. When Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon discovered the burial ground of King Tutankhamun on November 26, 1922, they found it in perfect condition, with all the richness of its contents still intact. Never before had an excavation uncovered such a perfectly preserved Egyptian tomb. Now, as the treasures of Tutankhamun once again travel the world on exhibition, this intriguing book brings to life the age of the Pharaohs as well as Carter and Carnarvon’s expedition, which revealed so much about ancient Egypt. It draws on the personal archives of Carter himself, and contains a trove of beautiful facsimiles of his own papers, including diaries and notebooks. Photographs, drawings, and diagrams from the original expedition capture all the excitement and wonder that must have accompanied the first view of this remarkable discovery. [1 copy available]
