ROOM FOR A LITTLE ONE: A Christmas Tale
by Martin Waddell. Lovely soft color illustrations by Jason Cockcroft. Condition: UNREAD c. 2008 Scholastic large soft cover (stapled wraps), second printing. Tiny edge wear. Content: Reviewer: "It's a cold winter's night, and Kind Ox is nesting, all snug in his stable out of the bitter wind, when a visitor comes along. Old Dog. Kind Ox invites Old Dog into the stable where he will be protected from the harm of the storm, and soon more animals have joined the two of them. Stray Cat, and Small Mouse, to be exact. Then Tired Donkey comes along, carrying a woman, Mary, on his back, and a man, Joseph, at his side. Mary is weary, for she is about to have her baby, but there is no room at the inn, so Joseph is worried. But Kind Ox invites them in, and provides shelter for Mary as she gives birth to the baby Jesus, a group of animals around them. This is a lovely picture book that will paint a simple picture of how Jesus came to be for young children. The prose is extremely easy to understand for all ages, and the illustrations, depicting scenes of animals in the snow, and inside the warmth of the stable, will capture the hearts of parents, as well as their children. A wonderful holiday tale." Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE VERY FIRST CHRISTMAS (The Gold Medallion Book Award)
by Paul L. Maier. Color illustrations by Francisco Ordaz. Condition: NEW 2003 Concordia soft cover, second printing. Content: Author and historian Paul Maier aims to "return the Christmas focus where it belongs" -- on the story and spirit surrounding Jesus' birth. Thus, The Very First Christmas doesn't follow the prescribed children's Christmas-book themes -- with fairy-tale winter settings in quaint, old European towns. Maier instead sets the story in the American West, where a curious 8-year-old boy named Christopher wants a "real" bedtime story. His mother then tells him the miraculous story of the Nativity. Maier lays out a traditional Christian apologetic approach, using tools such as archaeology and history to prove the trustworthiness of the Bible. In the chapters that follow, he analyzes the Nativity through the lenses of economics, law, literature, geography and even meteorology, claiming that this composite reveals the "unfamiliar story" of Christ's birth. Some readers may quibble that Maier bases his claims on a rather selective reading of the evidence, but most will enjoy the rich detail he offers about daily life in Palestine around the year 5 B.C. [Ages 4 - 8] The thinking child's Christmas Story. Questions welcome. (1 copy available)
