THE OLD MAN OF LOCHNAGAR
by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales (Prince Charles). Wonderful soft watercolor illustrations by Sir Hugh Casson K.C.V.O. Condition: Prince Charles has crafted an adorable nonsense book that is the adventure of an old man who lives in a cave by the Loch of Lochnagar. It is filled with such characters as a grouse who repels visitors, underwater haggis who revolve as they swim, the miniature green people of Gorm, and the birds and fishes who live in the skies and lochs around Balmoral. The story was written for Prince Charles' younger brothers were were ages 9 and 5 at the time. Too cute. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE ORIGINALS: Animals That Time Forgot
by Jane Yolen. Beautiful, detailed color paintings by Ted Lewin. Condition: UNREAD 1999 Philomel hardcover (pictorial boards -no DJ), first impression. Tiny shelf wear. Content: Strong poetry and astonishingly beautiful paintings celebrate animals across the world that have hardly changed through time. There's the gorgeously preening red jungle fowl, the huge Tamworth pig, the wild Exmoor pony, the dark-faced Churro sheep of the Navajo; Biblical animals, some of them still living in the "stone-sown deserts," the meadows, mountains, and moors of their very first homes. Lewin's dramatic paintings almost overwhelm the words at times, but children--on their own and in science and poetry classes--will be fascinated by the stories of evolutionary roots and endurance ("history written strong / in bone and skin / in hoof and horn"). A page of notes at the back extends what the poems say about each animal's origins and descendants. Kindergarten to adults. This is a wonderful book!! Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

PETER THE GREAT
by Diane Stanley. Ornate, colorful and detailed illustrations by the Author. Condition: UNREAD 1986 Morrow Junior Books soft cover, no printing given. I believe this particular printing to be later than 1986, but. . . Content: This profusely illustrated biography has a moderate amount of good-sized text and at least one illustration on every two-page spread. Stanley's fine illustrations of Tsar Peter and his Russia are vivid and uncluttered, yet still give a sense of the ornate formality of the royal surroundings and attire. That Stanley concentrates on the extraordinary achievements of Peter the Great is not surprising, but the omission of some basic biographical data is a problem. Peter's ascent to the throne is presented as without difficulty, when it was actually a struggle for power among Peter, his half-brother Ivan, and his half-sister Sophia. The bitter upheavals caused by Peter's attempt to reform the church and limit its influence is reduced to the Tsar taxing long beards at court; his desire to establish Russia as a seapower is based on a pleasant sailing experience, instead of the military defeat at Azov that made Peter acknowledge his nation's lack of adequate sea vessels and ports. Peter's accomplishments are highlighted, while the measures he took to achieve such sweeping reforms are given attention. Peter's childhood, his love of sailing, traveling across Europe in disguiseare described in an effort to make this complex historical figure accessible to the primary/middle grade age group, and in this Stanley is successful. [While the uglier side of Peter is not presented here, the "good" intro to this man for young children is appropriate, IMHO.] Grades 3 - 5. [1 copy available.]

A PIECE OF HOME (Russian Immigrants)
by Sonia Levitin. Color illustrations by Juan Wijngaard. Condition: NEW 1996 Dial Books for Young Readers hardcover (pictorial boards) and DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. DJ has tiny edgewear bottom corners. Content: When Gregor's family emigrates to the United States from Russia, he is allowed to take one item. The "piece of home" he chooses is his baby blanket-a surprising choice for a school-age boy, and indicative of Gregor's anxiety. But his dicey choice only compounds his trepidation: Will his American cousin Elie think he is a baby for bringing a blanket? Levitin (Nine for California) tells this tale with great empathy, steering clear of sentimentality. Gregor's divided feelings ring true, as do those of his anxious and excited parents. Wijngaard's (Emma Bean) realistic watercolor renderings, perceptive and expressive, virtually tell the story on their own. He captures moments so clearly-Gregor's skeptical inspection of American airplane food, for example-that young readers will feel they are sharing these characters' experience. Ages 4-8.

A PLACE WEHRE SUNFLOWERS GROW (Bilingual - Japanese/English)
by Amy Lee-Tai. Wonderful colorful illustrations that make Topaz look better than it probably was by Felicia Hoshino. Condition: NEW 2012 Children's Book Press large paperback, first paperback edition, first printing. Bilingual - each page has the English text and Japanese text. Content: Under the harsh summer sun, Mari’s art class has begun. But it’s hard to think of anything to draw in a place where nothing beautiful grows — especially a place like Topaz, the internment camp where Mari’s family and thousands of other Japanese Americans have been sent to live during World War II. Somehow, glimmers of hope begin to surface — in the eyes of a kindly art teacher, in the tender words of Mari’s parents, and in the smile of a new friend. Amy Lee-Tai’s sensitive prose and Felicia Hoshino’s stunning mixed-media images show that hope can survive even the harshest injustice. Essential American history, IMHO. [1 copy left]

PRINCE IVAN AND THE FIREBIRD
retold by Cherry Gilchrist. Beautiful soft color illustrations by Andrei Troshkov. Condition: Gently pre-read 1994 Barefoot hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Problems: top edge of the DJ shows edge wear and a "repaired" tear. Light edgewear to DJ corners. Book is clean & tight. Content: Artwork as vivid and ornate as a Faberge egg, combined with a smooth-as-silk text, keep this from becoming just another retelling of a classic tale. Gilchrist draws on 19th-century Russian writer Afanasiev's version for her elegant rendition, maintaining his dark undertones in this story of sibling treachery and mystical adventure. Artist Troshkov accentuates these themes, using a midnight-hued canvas for his distinctly Russian, intensely colored illustrations. In the end, of course, all is well: Prince Ivan is brought back to life after his jealous brothers murder him; he wins the hand of the beauteous Princess Helen the Fair; he regains the Horse with the Golden Mane; and he lives happily ever after to boot. Though lengthy, Gilchrist's version is fluid and compelling. Ages 10-up. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE RAUCOUS ROYALS: Test your Royal Wits: Crack Codes, Solve Mysteries, and Deduce Which Royal Rumors are True
by Carlyn Beccia. Clever, detailed, fun color illustrations by the Author. Condition: NEW 2008 Houghton Mifflin hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Grade 4–8—This lighthearted look at historical rumors about European rulers from Vlad Dracula to George III is full of humor, interesting facts, and insightful perspectives. Some of the rumors turn out to be true (Henry VIII's weight), some are false (Louis XIV's bathing habits), and several are still undecided (Richard III as a murderer). Examining their veracity is a clever hook that leads into a fascinating look at how gossip, literature, and other unreliable sources can be taken as truth over time. The author provides just enough introductory context and shares well-chosen anecdotes and facts in an engaging conversational style. Varied approaches keep each section fresh: a mock casebook presents the "rumor suspects" regarding the death of Catherine the Great, for example, and opposing arguments from fictional historians show both sides of the question of Peter the Great's actual "greatness." Comic portraits and other illustrations add to the irreverent tone. Mary I reaches from her picture frame to grab the crown of Elizabeth in one scene, and a lineup of males against a wall demonstrates Napoleon's taller-than-average stature, among other funny examples. The conclusion offers tips on how to use research to gauge the accuracy of historical rumors, and a bibliography cites multiple sources for each figure covered in the book. This humorous approach to history has strong booktalk potential, and also serves as a compelling introduction to the notion that separating fact from fiction can be challenging and fun. SONGS FOR SURVIVAL: Songs and Chants From Tribal Peoples Around the World
compiled by Nikki Siegen-Smith. Wonderful, colorful illustrations by Bernard Lodge. Condition: NEW 1996 Dutton hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing, American edition. Tiny edge wear to DJ edges. Content: This anthology of songs and chants from the tribal peoples of six continents may exert its strongest appeal to elementary school teachers looking for supplemental texts about tribal cultures. The entries are divided into songs about "beginnings," those that venerate the "living world," those that discuss the elements and those that celebrate survival. Siegen-Smith samples an impressive range of sources; there are a dozen peoples from Africa alone. Lodge, meanwhile, works in a unified style, supplying lino-cuts that seem generally primitivist but are specific to no one culture. A repeated line of tiny figures dances across the bottom of each page while individual prints, faintly reminiscent of cave art or museum artifacts, embellish given songs. An entry grouped under "The Living World," for example, a children's game from Thailand - "Crocodile! Crocodile!... You can't bite us!" - is illustrated with a design of bright yellow and green outlined in black, in the shape of a river crocodile, while a footnote explains the riverside game of tag that the chant typically accompanies. The volume includes an introduction and appendix written by Stephen Corry, director of Survival International- to which proceeds from the original sale of the book was donated - that discusses the importance of songs in all cultures and the location and customs of various tribal groups. There are many entries from the North Aemrican Tribes (including the Inuit) and the ancient American civilizations (Aztec, Maya) as well. Excellent book!!! Ages 8-up. [1 copy available]

A STREET THROUGH TIME: A 12,000-Year Walk Through History
by Dr. Anne Millard. Wonderful, detailed, historically accurate color illustrations by Steve Noon. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, c. 2000 DK hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ, 12th printing American edition. DJ shows light shelf wear to top DJ edge. Interior perfect. Content: With each turn of its elongated pages, this imaginative volume graphically reveals the continuity of history. Beginning in the year 10,000 B.C., in a Stone Age hunters' camp, the book reveals how its riverfront location is key to the site's development. This primitive camp is the germ of the modern, bustling, big-city street viewed in the concluding double-page spread. In between, each panoramic image of this same locale witnesses significant achievements of each spotlighted epoch. The view from the Iron Age of 600 B.C. makes clear the impact of iron tools and weapons, and the next page jumps to A.D. 100 when the Roman influence means large stone buildings, a bridge, and an elaborate lifestyle. The medieval centuries draw repeated attention: first, the street as part of a village is visited in the 1200s; increased prosperity and growth see the village blossom into a town in the 1400s; the scene of the 1500s, eerily painted at night, intensifies the grisly realities of the Black Plague of that era. The text is printed in the borders, surrounding the pages and serving as a guide through the elaborately detailed illustrations, where keen-eyed readers can spot elements of humor and everyday life portrayed by the diminutive residents peopling the pages. There are also Where's Waldotype gimmicks to make a game of gleaning the most information from the busy artwork. A fun and effective way to lure youngsters into the study and enjoyment of history. SUNDIATA: Lion King of Mali
by David Wisniewski (Golem). Beautiful, bright detailed color illustrations by the Author. Loose end page is a color map of Sundiata's travels. Condition: NEW 1993 Clarion large soft cover, no printing given. Content: An appealing biography of Sundiata, credited as the founder of the Mali empire. A lengthy author's note informs readers as to how little firsthand information on the topic is available, and that what is known has been handed down orally by griots , or African storytellers. Therefore, the narrative has the distinctive, if somewhat mystical, flow of an oral history. Sundiata neither walks nor speaks for the first seven years of his life, but is still named heir over his older brother. Regardless of the pronouncement, following the king's death, Sundiata and his mother are forced into exile. How the Lion King of Mali defeats his enemies and becomes the rightful ruler makes for an exciting tale. Wisniewski's characteristic artwork (vivid colored paper designs that have been intricately cut, arranged, mounted, and then photographed) add to the drama of the tale and are consistent with the folkloric tone. The characters have personality and vitality, and the setting has a texture and richness that heightens climactic moments of the story. Neither straightforward biography nor folktale, this is an interesting combination of the two. Grade 4 & up. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

SURVIVING HITLER: A Boy in the Nazi Death Camps
by Andrea Warren. B&W era photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 2002 HarperTrophy soft cover, no printing given. Content: Through the words and memories of Jack Mandelbaum, Warren presents a harrowing account of a Jewish boy's experience in Nazi prison camps. Mandelbaum had lived a comfortable life with his family in Gdynia, Poland, until the German invasion forced them to flee to a relative's village in 1939. Later, when the Jews were sent to concentration camps, the 12-year-old became separated from the rest of his family and wound up in the Blechhammer camp. By describing events through the boy's voice, the author does an excellent job of letting his words carry the power of the story. She avoids historical analysis, sticking to Mandelbaum's experiences, and brings readers into the nightmarish world of the concentration camp with a strong feeling of immediacy. As with many stories of great suffering, some of the minor details, such as risking death to steal a jar of marmalade, deliver the most impact. Besides the physical hardship, Warren conveys how frustrating and confusing it was for a child in such an environment. Once liberated, the young man learned the sad fate of his family and as he ironically observed, had he known his parents and siblings would not survive, he might not have struggled so hard to live himself. Black-and-white contemporary photographs illustrate the book. Grade 6 & up. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE TALE OF THE MANDARIN DUCKS
by Katherine Paterson. Beautiful color illustratins by Leo & Diane Dillon. Condition: UNREAD 1991 Scholastic soft cover, 4th printing. Blank bookplate inside front cover. Content: Reviewer: "This lovely book maeasures up to every standard one can reasonably expect. The artwork is skilled and enjoyable. The story has kindness, altruism, moral dilemma and resolution, reward, and a big touch of magic. There's a pleasant realism about story, too. It shows a number of details of Japanese life, in passing, to give a storybook kid views of a life [s]he might never have seen in person. And, although the words "happily ever after" never actually appear, the last page shows the young couple deep in their old age. The book, as a whole, meets every objective standard of what I like to see in a children's book. For me, though, this book goes way beyond reasonable standards, well into the things I favor in a very personal and subjective way. TREE OF CRANES
by Allen Say. Beautiful full-page color illustrations by the Author. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1992 Scholastic Book Club Edition hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), first printing. Binding error bottom cover spine.Name top of Title Page. Interior perfect. Content: Heedless of Mama's warnings, a Japanese boy cannot resist playing at an ice-cold pond "filled with carp of bright colors." When he comes home, he is immediately treated for a cold, with a hot bath and rice gruel. His mother's attitude chills him more than the weather, though; he cannot understand why she seems to be ignoring him. Hearing a noise in the garden, the boy spies Mama digging up the pine tree that was planted when he was born. She brings it inside and decorates it with paper cranes and candles. It is a Christmas tree, the first for the boy, and the first in many years for his mother, who tells her son she comes from "a warm place called Ca-li-for-ni-a." The story is a poignant one, illuminated with finely drawn illustrations reflecting the serenity of a Japanese home and the quiet love between mother and son. Say, who came to this country from Japan when he was a teenager, again exhibits a laudable sensitivity to Eastern and Western cultures--and to both the differences and the similarities between them. Other travels: Africa, South America, Africa, The Maori of New Zealand, Indonesia, China, & Russia. Each section is accompanied with fold outs, and envelopes full of information, i.e., how to build a teepee and recipes for eating like a native. A 2-page Color map of the travels is provided. TUAN (Vietnam)
by Eva Boholm-Olsson. Wonderful color illustrations by Pham Van Don. Condition: Gently pre-read 1988 R & S (Stockholm) hard cover (pictorial boards - No DJ), first American edition. Light shelf wear to top spine - no major problems, just pre-read. Content: Tuan is a Vietnamese boy, only five years old, whose night includes dreams disrupted by mosquitoes that come through the paneless windows, and whose day includes romping with a water buffalo with a friend (who has to return to the fields to work before too long). When Tuan is bitten by a rabid dog, the village doctor has no way to guarantee that he will be able to get the medicine to save him. In her introduction, Boholm-Olsson expresses her desire to show how children in the Third World live, and she has accomplished that. The illustrations extend the portrait in fluid watercolors, with puddles of paint enhancing every scene. The book is of universal appeal, for those who want to see another part of the world, or those children who are, perhaps, homesick. Ages 3-up. [1 copy available.]

WARRIOR SON OF A WARRIOR SON: A Masai Tale (African Tales & Myths series)
retold by Melinda Lilly. Vivid color illustrations by Charles Reasoner. Condition: NEW 1998 Rourke hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), no printing given. Content: Together, these African tales offer a diverse sampling of tale types, motifs, cultures, and languages. Kwian comes from the San Bushmen of South Africa and tells of a time when the sun lived in the left armpit of lazy Kattenttu and the moon was on the shoe of a praying mantis until a clever girl figured out how to get them both up in the sky where they belong. Tamba is a tale from the Temne of Sierra Leone and relates how a poor but kind young man wins the hand of a princess by completing three impossible tasks. In Warrior, a story from the Masai people of East Africa, a wise caterpillar outwits a lazy rabbit who tricks him out of his house, along with other animals who try to help the rabbit. Each book includes a source note and begins with a quote, proverb, or riddle in the native language and in English. The stories retain the flavor of their cultures by including words from the original language and glossaries. The illustrations are bright, colorful, semi-abstract cartoons. Close examination finds different shaped houses and different patterns and drapes of clothing and personal decoration in the three books, but the human faces are almost identical and the landscapes are too abstract to compare land forms or vegetation of the different settings. Additional purchases as read-alouds or to supplement curricula on the countries and cultures of Africa. This book: A Masai folktale about how the tiny caterpillar outsmarts the other animals even though they are much bigger and stronger. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]
