NOAH AND THE DEVIL: A Legend of Noah's Ark form Romania
retold by Neil Philip. Beautifully illustrated in color by Isabelle Brent. Condition: NEW 2001 Clarion Books hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket). first edition, first printing. Content: In this version of the familiar story, the Devil seizes the chance to board the ark when Noah impatiently exhorts his wife to hurry by calling, "Oh, you devil, come in!" Determined to sink the ship, the Devil, now in the form of a mouse, gnaws a hole in a plank. A cat catches the mouse, but the two land in the sea and the Devil escapes. As water rushes in, Noah makes a deal with a snake, which cuts off its tail to plug the hole in return for "a human being every day, for me and my children to eat." After the animals disembark, Noah realizes that if he fulfills his part of the bargain, humans will be extinct. So he throws the snake into the fire, and its scattered ashes turn to fleas. Those tiny creatures continue to get their daily quota of blood. Philip provides extensive source notes for various aspects of his tale. Done in watercolor and gold leaf, the art is similar in motif and design to Brent's illuminated Noah's Ark. Here, she has widened the borders and enlarged the inset paintings on the pages with text. This book will interest those searching for variants of the familiar Noah story, but even readers unfamiliar with Genesis can enjoy the twists and turns of this account. This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen. Ages 6 +. [1 copy available]

OLD TURTLE (ABBY Book of the Year for 1993)
by Douglas Wood. Beautiful, soft watercolors by Cheng-Khee Chee. Condition: Gently pre-read, If at all, 2003 Scholastic hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), third printing. Blank bookplate inside loose end page. The book has been perused, but sections appear unread. No major problems. Content: When all of creation--trees, stones, ants, the sky, fish—-begins arguing over who or what God is, quiet Old Turtle is the only one who has the wisdom and ability to see beyond herself to capture the essence. The debate escalates until Old Turtle finally speaks: "STOP!" She accepts and incorporates the beliefs of all the creatures: "God is indeed deep," she says to the fish in the sea, "and much higher than high," she tells the mountains. "God is gentle and powerful. Above all things and within all things... God IS." Old Turtle, after silencing the crowds with her understanding, makes a prediction about the appearance of a new "family of beings" in the world. These beings, human beings, do appear, and soon are fighting among themselves over the nature of God. It is only when people start listening to the mountains and winds and stones and stars that they actually begin to hear--and to heal the earth. A graceful fable, with elegant, dreamlike watercolors by illustrator Cheng-Khee Chee, Douglas Wood's modern-day classic makes a hushed but strong environmental statement, as well as a plea for universal acceptance. ONE CITY, TWO BROTHERS
by Chris Smith. Wonderful vivid color illustrations by Aurelia Fronty. Condition: NEW 2007 Barefoot Books large soft cover, first printing. Content: Reviewer: "When two brothers come to Solomon with a dispute about land inheritance, the king tells them the story of two other brothers who secretly transfer grain, each from his own stock to add to his brother's storehouse in the night. In the morning, they are puzzled and dismayed to find their own stores undiminished and, the next night, try again. On the third night, each bearing more sacks of grain for the other, they meet and embrace. This spot becomes the site of the holy temple and the very city of Jerusalem. The legend about Jerusalem has been widely told in English collections of Jewish folklore for generations. What makes this telling different is that Smith, who spent time working in Gaza and the West Bank, now casts it as a Palestinian Arab tale. He steps neutrally through the narrative, except that God is not mentioned as blessing the spot where the two brothers meet. No synagogues are present in any of the city scapes. Asterisks appear near proper names, such as Solomon, where Muslim readers might want to add "may peace be upon him." The production is certainly lovely. Stately Arab brothers move through acrylic blues and greens and reds that fill each page with rich color and simply illuminate the action. Smith took liberty to wrap the story of two loving brothers within the frame of two squabblers, which reinforces the theme of sharing. With his best wishes for peace, it is also unfortunate that Smith gives no sources for his claims in the afterward that this story belongs to both Arabs and Jews." All ages. Questions welcome. ONE DAY IN PARADISE
retold by and illustrations by Helme Heine. Beautiful, soft color rt work. . Condition: UNREAD Ex-Library book but with all markings. Unread 191986 Margaret McElderry (Athennum) hardcover (library binding - pictorial boards), first American edition. Content: In this original interpretation of the biblical creation story, Heine casts God as a human male artist. Singlehandedly, he takes on the task of creating the universe, dons a white beard and white suit, and uses modern equipment and techniques. On the sixth day, he sits at his easel sketching human forms in his own image. Finally, he molds Adam and Eve, his boy and girl children, from clay; he gives them life, immortal souls and paradise as a gift, then watches over them like a proud father. Happy with his work, he rests. Heine handles the story with dignity and imagination, and the final spreads of the children playing in their lush tropical paradise are evocative. Reviewer: "I truly and deeply love this book. In just a few sentences, Helme Heine tells the Biblical story of Creation. But it is the illustrations that make it a treasure. His watercolors are gentle, peaceful images of jungles and plains, icebergs and waterfalls, and all the creatures of the earth. But best of all is his portrait of God as a creator with a Santa Claus-like beard, a gentle, intelligent face and mud all over his jacket from all his hard work. He's an artist, a sculptor, a gardener, a scientist, a tinkerer, and a thinker. My favorite picture in the book is of God gazing lovingly out his window at Adam and Eve (who look like they are four or five years old) as they play a game of chase. It is such a wonderful image of God I can't imagine any child not loving the image they find in this book. This is one of the very best Bible stories for children I have ever seen." ONE WINTRY NIGHT
written by Ruth Bell Graham. Beautiful, detailed color illustrations (in the manner of Kraft) by Richard Jesse Watson. Condition: UNREAD 1997 Baker Books hardcvoer (red boards with gilt designs) and DJ (in mylar jacket), 4th printing. The book is unread, but has been perused on the shelf. Content: In a complex, lengthy picture book for older readers, an injured mountain boy, caught in a snowstorm at Christmastime, is taken in by a woman who lives in a log home the boy's grandfather helped build years before. After the snowbound pair become acquainted and the grandfather is notified of the boy's whereabouts, the woman launches into a telling of the Christmas story--beginning with the Creation and ending with the Resurrection. The setup seems awkward, but once the main story gets under way, things become more believable. Watson's artwork is unusually arresting, offering plenty of visual subtext to support the ambitious undertaking, which is actually a condensed retelling of the entire Bible. The double-spread Nativity scene truly commands attention, particularly the striking face of the young girl Anna, who has come to see the Christ child. Grades 4 - 6. [1 copy available]

PASCUAL AND THE KITCHEN ANGELS
text and color illustrations by Tomie DePaola. Condition: NEW 2006 Puffin soft cover, first printing. Content: DePaola brews up a delightful retelling of the life of the patron saint of cooks and the kitchen. On the day of Pascual's birth, angels sing in the trees, and his father realizes that "God must surely love him." Acrylic illustrations with soft pastel backgrounds show Pascual as a little boy, frolicking joyfully with animals and hanging garlands of flowers around the necks of sheep. The winsome paintings capture his serene spirituality as he and the creatures lift their voices toward heaven. Simple, well-chosen words reflect the youngster's sincere love for God and all of His creatures. When Pascual is older, he goes to the monastery of Saint Francis, hoping to become a friar and help the hungry. However, the friars ask him to make their meals. Knowing nothing about cooking, Pascual bows his head and prays. Suddenly, apron-wearing angelic visitors "swoosh in the air above him" and then descend to concoct a feast. Curious about the delicious meals coming from the kitchen, the friars spy on the dinner preparations and learn the truth. Realizing how much God values him, they decide to take a joyful Pascual with them to feed the hungry. Framed by light peach watercolors splashed with rainbow-colored droplets, the illustrations beautifully complement the celestial mood. An author's note provides some background about this humble man. Grades 1 - 4. [2 copies available]

PEACE ON EARTH; A Book of Prayes From Around the World
collected and color illustrations by Bijou Le Tord. Adorable simple illustrations. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1992 Doubleday hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Light shelf wear to bottom boards edges. Content: Simplicity and dignity characterize this perceptively edited anthology of prayers. Gathering hymns and songs of praise from the Inuit, the Baha'i, Breton fishermen, Pakistani children and diverse other groups, Le Tord gracefully suggests the universality of religious experience without drawing attention to particular denominations or creeds. Prayers are arranged according to natural phenomena ("Morning and Sun," "Plants and Harvesting," "Animals," etc.), with holiday offerings grouped together under the rubric "Songs and Celebrations." The artist's apparently effortless, delicately hued watercolors blend an appreciation of the everyday world with an intimation of the mystical--here, spirituality is both lightly worn and spontaneous. Some of the authors: Megan Boyd, Marc Chagall, Scot Chaskey, e.e. cummings, Aileen Fisher, Gerard Manley Hopkins (my personal favorite), Langston Hughes, Issa, Madeleine L'Engle, Ilos Orleans, Rumi, St. Francis, Leslie Marmon Silko, Shuntaro Tanikawa, et al. RAMADAN
by Susan L. Douglass. Lovely, soft color illustrations by Jeni Reeves. Condition: NEW 2002 Carolrhoda Books hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued) first printing. 48 pages. Content: The Islamic holy month of Ramadan may seem like a tough topic for beginning readers, but this On My Own Holiday Book provides an accessible, uplifting introduction. During Ramadan, children who attempt the fast (not required for kids) endure the challenges of going without food and water and "trying to be a good person all day" by remembering to share and forgive one another. The attractive colored-pencil illustrations show children at school and at home, and the constant presence of food in the illustrations reminds children that Ramadan is not about starving as much as it is about showing respect to God. SAINT FRANCIS SINGS TO BROTHER SUN: A Celebration of His Kinship With Nature
selected & retold by Karen Pandell. Beautiful, soft color illustrations by Bijou Le Tord. Decorated end pages. Condition: NEW 2005 Candlewick Press large hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Light edge wear to DJ edges. Content: From Karen Pandell and Bijou Le Tord comes an ode to Saint Francis's connection with nature that transcends culture and faith — an inspiration for all time and all people. "Sing praises to all Your creatures, And above all to Brother Sun, Who gives us the day as He enlightens us." -From Saint Francis's "The Canticle of Brother Sun" More than eight hundred years ago, a once-privileged young man cast off his worldly possessions to live an austere life amid nature, where his gentleness and compassionate words drew even wild creatures to his feet. The now-legendary Saint Francis of Assisi receives a fitting tribute in this elegant, inviting volume, in which stanzas of the "Canticle of Brother Sun" are interwoven with nature tales about the man who composed this sacred song and followed by an author's note, biography, bibliography, and source notes. Illustrated by Bijou Le Tord in delicate, graceful charcoal drawings highlighted with gold, reflecting both the saint's simplicity and his joyous spirit, this beautiful compilation makes it clear that the songs and stories of Saint Francis are indeed the heritage of every child. The book is beautifully designed. Unifying elements appear throughout, such as a repeated pattern of colored tiles, the verses of The Canticle reproduced in gold superimposed on a medieval-style shield background, and Le Tords gold-embellished, primitive-style paintings. All religions should relate to St. Francis' love of animals and the environment. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

SAINTS AMONG THE ANIMALS
by Cynthia Zarin. Wonderful B&W charcoal illustrations by Leonid Gore. Condition: NEW 2006 Richard Jackson hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Zarin, captivated by a 1905 book entitled Saints among the Animals, used that book and others as the basis for these stories of 10 saints, most living in the Dark Ages, and their often miraculous relationship with animals. The most famous is Saint Francis and the oft-told tale of how he dealt with the wolf of Gubbio. There are also stories of Saint Werburge, an English abbess who takes on troublesome geese; Saint Kenneth, a misshapen young man saved by birds; and Saint Hilda, who tames an infestation of snakes. Like many stories of saints, these tales contain elements that are not particularly child-friendly. For instance, the story of Saint Colman turns on the fact that the popular monk is a happy man, but to properly serve the Lord, he must live in isolation. Still, readers drawn to these tales will probably accept their quirks. The tales are neatly told, and the book's effective format--tall, with handsome charcoal artwork--is a pleasure to hold in hand. Paul Gallico's THE SHEPHERD'S SONG: The Twenty-Third Psalm
by King David. Beautiful, soft color paintings by Julia Miner. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1993 Dial Books for Young Readers hard cover & DJ (in mylar jacket), 1st edition, 1st printing. DJ price-clipped by bookstore. Content: The King James version of David's best-loved psalm, in a handsome large-sized setting with full-bleed paintings rendered in pastels. Miner depicts what could be a rocky Mediterranean seaside, with ancient stonework on mountain roads and updating in the form of metal pails, a modern lantern and boots, and a girl in plaits (among others) to tend the sheep. The relationship between shepherds and flock is center stage, in a gorgeous landscape dramatically lit by the setting sun or beneath a darkened sky. The ``enemy'' is a wolf, chased away with the help of a trusty dog; the cup that ``runneth over'' is realized over literally with an awkwardly held ladle used to feed lambs, but that's a minor defect in an outstandingly appealing debut, that makes an imaginative exploration of the word ``pastoral.'' Paul Gallico's THE SMALL MIRACLE
retold by Bob Barton. Lovely soft color illustrations by Carolyn Croll. Condition: NEW 2003 Henry Holt hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), first printing. Content: Retold in simple sentences, this is the story of a young Italian orphan whose faith is rewarded. When Pepino's beloved donkey falls ill, the boy must travel from his home in Assisi to Rome in order to ask the Pope for special permission to bring the animal into the crypt of Saint Francis, with the hope that she will be cured. The original tale has more detailed, descriptive language and a more deeply layered plot. Still, this abridged version succeeds in a quiet way since the journey of faith remains. Done in watercolors and colored pencils, Croll's illustrations nicely convey the emotions of the characters and the events they experience. The colors are soft and details well chosen. Some pictures are full page, while others are sectioned into four panels, making for effective visual variety. Ages 6+. [1 copy available]

THE TALE OF REBEKAH RABBIT [SIGNED BY AUTHOR]
by Jean McCurdy Meade. Adorable and soft color illustrations by Barbara Hosterman Clark. Condition: NEW 2009 Dog Ear paperback, no printing given. Content: Where did the story of the Easter Bunny come from? What does Easter, the Day on which Jesus was raised from the dead that Christians celebrate every year with great joy, have to do with a rabbit that brings joy to children? Did it ever occur to you that there might have been a family of rabbits in the Garden outside Jerusalem where Jesus was laid in the tomb on that sad, amazing day we call Good Friday? Well, if there were rabbits in that garden, maybe one of them saw the Risen Lord even before the faithful women went to the tomb and encountered the Angel telling the news of His Resurrection. Maybe she was a little bunny named Rebekah, who was curious about the strange rumbling she felt early, early that Sunday morning, and the beautiful light that came with the dawn, so out she hopped into the garden, all alone, while her brothers and sisters slept. And there she met the most wonderful person in the world - and somehow she knew Him and He knew her!! And then maybe that little bunny was able to say something without words to those women - and they included her in their story to the others. But then, over the centuries, the part about the rabbit and the first Easter day got forgotten -mostly. Fantasy can be a wonderful way to connect with the truths taught by the Christian faith. Based on the Gospel of Matthew, "The Tale of Rebekah Rabbit" is for children and adults with a heart for what may have happened if, as old legends tell us, animals can talk among themselves and, like humans, can recognize the voice of their Maker! Jean Alden McCurdy Meade, an Episcopal priest since 2002, is the Rector of Mount Olivet Episcopal Church, New Orleans. Ms. Clark is from Crockett, Tx. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

Content: Reviewer: "This book is a charming story of the wise King Solomon, and how the Queen of Sheba came to trick him to prove that he was not wise, and shame him before the whole world. King Solomon's kindness to a bee is what ultimately saves him from the Queen of Sheba's manipulations. the story is wonderful, but the gorgeous illustrations by Anita Lobel are what have stuck with me the most through all these years. Those illustrations were part of what helped to excite my interest in art at a young age. Years and years have passed, but I've always remembered this story and it's lovely pictures." ZEN ABC
by Amy Zerner. Wonderful color illustrations by Amy Zerner & Jessie Spicer Zerner. Condition: NEW c. 1993 Charles Tuttle hard cover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, no printing given. Content: Mother-daughter team Amy Zerner and Jessie Spicer Zerner have compiled a collection of classical and contemporary haiku and poetry to accompany their lavishly illustrated, illuminated alphabet in ZEN ABC. Meant to be a children's book, ZEN ABC - though perfect for little ones - is beautiful and contains enough classical, traditional, and contemporary material to appeal to all ages. A lot of aunts and uncles who give this book to treasured youngsters will probably be seen going back into the children's section for a personal copy to keep. And who can blame them? The jewel- toned illustrations are imaginative and down-right gorgeous. The correlations of letters and what they stand for has an appealing quality too... "...N is for Nirvana...O is for One Mind...Z is for Zen..." This is the perfect way to introduce children to the alphabet and Zen concepts as well. ZEN ABC is a book to be read, re-read, treasured, displayed, and celebrated. 6+. (1 copy available)
