N Is for Navidad (Bilingual)
by Susan Middleton Elya & Merry Banks. Wonderful colorful illustrations by Joe Cepeda. Condition: NEW 2006 Chronicle hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: A lively introduction to Latino Christmas traditions follows an alphabetical structure as a way to introduce key Spanish terms and explain holiday customs and activities. The highlighted words include the Spanish words for decorations, food, family members, key characters in the Nativity story and terms relating to church attendance. Additional days of celebration, such as Las Posadas and Three Kings Day, are also included. The authors skillfully pack their short, rhyming text with a rather amazing amount of information, while still making the text peppy and interesting. Cepeda fills his buoyant paintings with fruits and flowers in brilliant colors, smiling people enjoying the holiday treats and backgrounds in bright greens and blues creating a cheerful mood. The illustrations show one extended family enjoying the holiday in a chronological progression, from hanging the first decorations at the beginning of the season to setting out their zapatos (shoes) for Three Kings Day. An author's note provides further information (noting that most of the customs included are Mexican in origin), and a glossary gives pronunciations for the Spanish words and complete definitions. ONE WINTRY NIGHT
written by Ruth Bell Graham. Beautiful, detailed color illustrations (in the manner of Kraft) by Richard Jesse Watson. Condition: UNREAD 1997 Baker Books hardcvoer (red boards with gilt designs) and DJ (in mylar jacket), 4th printing. The book is unread, but has been perused on the shelf. Content: In a complex, lengthy picture book for older readers, an injured mountain boy, caught in a snowstorm at Christmastime, is taken in by a woman who lives in a log home the boy's grandfather helped build years before. After the snowbound pair become acquainted and the grandfather is notified of the boy's whereabouts, the woman launches into a telling of the Christmas story--beginning with the Creation and ending with the Resurrection. The setup seems awkward, but once the main story gets under way, things become more believable. Watson's artwork is unusually arresting, offering plenty of visual subtext to support the ambitious undertaking, which is actually a condensed retelling of the entire Bible. The double-spread Nativity scene truly commands attention, particularly the striking face of the young girl Anna, who has come to see the Christ child. Grades 4 - 6. [1 copy available]

Opus n' Bill in A WISH FOR WINGS THAT WORK (DVD)
by Universal. Condition: NEW (shink-wrapped) 2007 DVD release of the 1991 animated movie. Content: Take your family to Bloom County with the quirky perennial favorite Opus n' Bill in A Wish for Wings That Work, a whimsical, wacky cartoon treat that's as funny for grownups as it is fun for kids! From Pulitzer Prize-winning author-artist Berkeley Breathed, it's a merry, madcap romp with Opus the earthbound penguin and his brain-fried feline cohort, Bill. Wrestling with an unfulfilled wish to soar through the air like any other self-respecting bird, the plucky penguin decides there's only one person who can make his aeronautic dream come true: Father Christmas. Bill the Cat coughs up a wild idea that just may bring a holiday miracle, but when ol' St. Nick finds himself in hot water on December 24th, the fate of Christmas itself suddenly depends on the kind of heroism that only comes in a penguin-sized package! Will Opus come to the rescue and learn the value of being true to oneself? Perfect companion to the book. [1 copy available]

THE POLAR EXPRESS [Caldecott Medal winner]
text and color illustations by Chris Van Allsburg. Condition: NEW 1985 Houghton Mifflin hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), 38th printing. Beautiful illustrations. Content: One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder. The 2004 movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis and starred Tom Hanks, Leslie Harter Zemeckis, Eddie Deezen, Nona Gaye, and Peter Scolari. SANTA CALLS (Christmas in West Texas)
written & illustrated by William Joyce. Vivid & adorable color illustrations. Condition: Very Good 1993 HarperCollins large hardcover and DJ (price-clipped & in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. The only problem with the book: gift inscription loose endpage. Content: Set in 1908 Abilene, Texas, it is the story of orphan Art Atchinson Aimesworth, his friend Spaulding Littlefeets and his sister Esther. One Christmas Eve Art receives a mysterious box and a summons to come to the North Pole -- signed "S.C." Intrigued (to say the least!), Art and his cohorts construct the machine inside the box and fly off to visit Santa, where adventures await them, Mr. and Mrs. Claus greet them, and Art renews his love for his sister. There is a surprise ending that lets us know that Santa and Esther have been in cahoots all along. [William Joyce is a magnificent illustrator. If you've ever happened to catch one of his covers for the New Yorker then you know what I'm talking about. Joyce has a style all his own. His pictures are curvy and lit with subtle variations. He's so accomplished that when he draws a gigantic character with just a tiny black dot of an eye, that character appears warm and inviting rather than scary and intimidating. As an artist, he is probably one of the best living today.] Questions welcome.

"Christmas Tree Soup" will remind children of "Stone Soup" ; other stories deal with finding perfect presents or conquering disbelief about jolly St. Nick. by Brian Gleeson. Beautiful color ilustrations in the form of stained glass by Robert Van Nutt. Condition: BOOK ONLY!!! NEW 1993 Rabbit Ears hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Other illustrators have used the conventions of stained glass in creating art for picture books, but few have been as successful as Van Nutt in creating illustrations that look like traditional stained glass windows. The gestures of the figures, the jewel-bright hues, the placement of the black outlines, the style of the overpainting, and the luminous quality of the colors are all reminiscent of stained glass in churches and cathedrals. Retelling the Christmas story from the Annunciation to the return from Egypt to Nazareth, Gleeson's simple, respectful text is longer than most picture-book versions. Ages 4 - 8. [1 copy available]

The story, with its message of appreciating every single day, not just special ones like Christmas, and regardless of your circumstances, is an important one for all ages." TREE OF CRANES
by Allen Say. Beautiful full-page color illustrations by the Author. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1992 Scholastic Book Club Edition hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), first printing. Binding error bottom cover spine.Name top of Title Page. Interior perfect. Content: Heedless of Mama's warnings, a Japanese boy cannot resist playing at an ice-cold pond "filled with carp of bright colors." When he comes home, he is immediately treated for a cold, with a hot bath and rice gruel. His mother's attitude chills him more than the weather, though; he cannot understand why she seems to be ignoring him. Hearing a noise in the garden, the boy spies Mama digging up the pine tree that was planted when he was born. She brings it inside and decorates it with paper cranes and candles. It is a Christmas tree, the first for the boy, and the first in many years for his mother, who tells her son she comes from "a warm place called Ca-li-for-ni-a." The story is a poignant one, illuminated with finely drawn illustrations reflecting the serenity of a Japanese home and the quiet love between mother and son. Say, who came to this country from Japan when he was a teenager, again exhibits a laudable sensitivity to Eastern and Western cultures--and to both the differences and the similarities between them. There is the savory porridge, kutya (each aunt's recipe is different); there are paper ornaments, a sleigh ride and, not least, Vova's loving decoration of an evergreen for the animals outside. The year after Vova's death, the family's sorrow is tempered by the miraculous sight of the animals decorating Vova's tree. Polacco uses splashes of vibrant watercolor with delicately pencilled faces--an unusual and striking technique that manages both to exude the gaiety of the celebrations in the here-and-now and to suggest the centuries on which the customs rest. She highlights intriguing details of Russian holiday lore and also pays tribute to the importance of honoring one's heritage by preserving tradition. [1 copy only]

THE VERY FIRST CHRISTMAS (The Gold Medallion Book Award)
by Paul L. Maier. Color illustrations by Francisco Ordaz. Condition: NEW 2003 Concordia soft cover, second printing. Content: Author and historian Paul Maier aims to "return the Christmas focus where it belongs" -- on the story and spirit surrounding Jesus' birth. Thus, The Very First Christmas doesn't follow the prescribed children's Christmas-book themes -- with fairy-tale winter settings in quaint, old European towns. Maier instead sets the story in the American West, where a curious 8-year- old boy named Christopher wants a "real" bedtime story. His mother then tells him the miraculous story of the Nativity. Maier lays out a traditional Christian apologetic approach, using tools such as archaeology and history to prove the trustworthiness of the Bible. In the chapters that follow, he analyzes the Nativity through the lenses of economics, law, literature, geography and even meteorology, claiming that this composite reveals the "unfamiliar story" of Christ's birth. Some readers may quibble that Maier bases his claims on a rather selective reading of the evidence, but most will enjoy the rich detail he offers about daily life in Palestine around the year 5 B.C. [Ages 4 - 8] The thinking child's Christmas Story. Questions welcome. (1 copy available)
